Using Converters in Russia
There are two basic standard wall currents in the world, 100-125 volts, and 220-250 volts. Russia uses the 220-250 volt system. The USA uses the 100-125 volt system
You now need to determine if your appliance is "dual-voltage." Some appliances are dual-voltage (newer models of camera chargers, travel hairdryers that can be purchased at local stores such as Walmart); they are designed to operate on voltage between 100-250 volts without damage to the components. These appliances do not require transformers/converters. Many North American-made appliances, however, are designed to operate only within the 100-125 volt range. These appliances will suffer damage if plugged into 220-250 volts.
To determine the voltage requirements, you'll need to look at the appliance and find the "AC IN" which is the Input #. Power requirements are usually displayed on the appliance on the back where the cord is attached. Laptops and other equipment that have a detachable cord often have a box in the middle of the cord or a large box at the plug end that displays the input power requirements. If the appliance lists 110, 115, 120 or 125 volts only, it is not dual-voltage. If the appliance lists 100-240 or 110-230 or something similar, it is dual voltage. You do not need a converter, only an plug adapter. A plug adapter is the small piece with two, round, small prongs which will allow you to insert the plug into Russia's wall socket.
If you are not sure, do not guess. It is very important to be sure of the voltage requirements before proceeding.
It is best to use the bathroom sockets for charging cameras, etc. Also, if you plug something into the bathroom socket and turn out the light, the socket may lose power and therefore, your camera will not charge. You may have to leave the bathroom light on in some Russian hotels to charge your camera.
If you have any questions about your appliance/camera, you can call Magellan's or visit their website, www.magellans.com for an interactive guide (you can enter your appliance info. and they will guide you in regards to what is needed in order for it to work and not be damaged).
LEEAF does not accept any responsibility for damage to appliances, cameras, etc. Please research well before using any appliance, converter, adaptor, etc in a foreign country.
